Lemonade Recipe

Country Mouse City Spouse

I am slightly addicted to lemonade during the warm summer months.  It’s just the perfect drink to sit outside sipping while enjoying the weather and the company of family and friends.  I try to always have a pitcher of it in my fridge, so I’m ready at the drop of a hat for company if they stop by.

I am pretty sure I still have the values and preparation of my grandmothers and my mom in that you should always be prepared for unexpected guests, and greet them with a snack and a beverage.  (I don’t know if this is carryover from the immigrant part of my background, but I do know that in most of Europe visiting is accompanied by tea-time, but I’m just hypothesizing here.)

Serve this in a glass pitcher with Mason jar glasses, and you’ll be the favorite place for visitors in the entire neighborhood!!

The recipe follows, but I want to add in a few of the tips and tricks that I use to make this even better.

Making Lemonade

First off, I purchase whole lemons not bottled lemon juice.  Why?  Because typically it’s cheaper for a bag of lemons than a bottle of juice and the bag will yield you about twice of what a bottle will.  Also, I think that fresh juice holds a better quality of sour to go with the sweetness of the sugar.  I’ve used bottled before and it seems overly tart to me.  Maybe I’m just picky.  *Shrug*

I also use my Breville juicer to extract the juice.  I find I don’t waste have to compost as much of the lemon this way.  It also seems to help get more juice.  I juice about 8 lemons (peeled to avoid their bitterness)  at a time and put back the excess over the 2 cups I need for salad dressings or marinades or whatever I may use it for during the week.

I’m also a sucker for a twist on the traditional lemonade flavor.  I have been known to add in different essential oils in order to make it a little different.  One of my favorites to add is Lavender.  If you choose to add some in, do it immediately after you take the sugar water off the stovetop to cool.  The essential oil will bind to the sugar and will help keep the oil evenly dispersed in the lemonade without floating to the top.  Want to try adding in some of the BEST, highest quality essential oils available?  Check out the ones I use here.
