Naturally Treating a Sore, Scratchy Throat

So, for those of us in Ohio, winter showed up in an instant this week. I kid you not, I went from hoodie in the rain to all bundled up, freezing, snow covered blizzard in a 2-mile drive to the grocery store. (I wish I had seen it coming & hadn’t been driving… I’d have gotten video of the digital temperature gauge in my car dropping 12 degrees in less than 5 minutes!)
Because of the quick switch, my throat is KILLING me.
I think that when we get a gradual change, we adjust the depth of our breathing outside to account for the cold. There was no adjusting in this. This just slapped me right across the face.
As is typical for me, once a year when the weather changes I get this throat issue and end up losing my voice for about 24 hours. It’s gotten to be a ritual. Every time the temperatures dip to a consistent below freezing range this happens.
I learned long ago that cough medicine, cold remedy OTC stuff in general, is just disgusting. It tastes like iodine mixed with moonshine mixed with a dry KoolAid packet. With no sugar. (I’m not sure what that would ACTUALLY taste like, and please, no one try it.)
Instead of using any of that, I use the most natural things I can come across.
Enter my homemade tea.
I’m not a big fan of Keurig in general (wasteful contraptions that they are) but I have one, and I figure it’s MORE wasteful to throw it away. So, I keep it around to brew hot water for tea or whatever.
I’m normally a coffee drinker, so it’s not necessarily the heat that helps, it’s what I put in.
Oh, and I have a preference for BIG mugs of coffee. A big cup of tea it is!!
Start with 8-10oz of hot water.
(You can boil if you like, as I said, I just brew through the Keurig over the next two ingredients.)
1 tbsp. honey
(Local & organic if you can get it. I get mine from Waldo Ohio Apiaries or their resellers.)
2-3 drops Lemon essential oil
(Purchase it here.)
(Or 1 tsp. lemon juice, or a slice of a lemon, just whatever you have on hand. I think the oil is more potent for smell and the inhalation seems to have a little to do with feeling better. But that’s just my opinion, not medical fact, so do what you choose.)
Just stir, sip or drink. It really will help. I swear by this recipe. I have even been known to pack my honey and lemon oil with me to work if it’s really bugging me.
Try it out and see what you think. Let me know if it helps you!!
