Ten Ways to Make 2017 Your Absolute Best Year Ever
New Year’s resolutions. We’ve all made them, and honestly, I can’t remember even once that I stuck to it. We make HUGE goals- unrealistic really. It is unfair to yourself to make a huge list of things you want to do. So don’t. Make 2017 your best year ever by trying 10 new ways to reach your goals.
Make a New Year’s INTENTIONS list.
Don’t write resolutions. Make a list of things you intend to do. Just changing how you view the things that you want to do this year will cause you to change how you approach these things.
Write HOW you plan on doing these things.
Say your goal is to complete a quilt (finally). Sit down and think of how you can actually get this done. Do you need to get supplies? What about learning how to do the binding? Setting out the exact steps that you need to do in order to get to your goal makes the big picture seem more manageable.
Do you need to schedule time for it? Make a plan for your intentions.
Is there some free time in your week to set aside to make your goals happen?
Schedule time to do these things.
Even if you know you have time, schedule appointments with yourself to work on doing what you intend to do. Whether you have a chunk of time on Sunday afternoon or spread it out across some evenings during the week, make sure you KEEP the appointments you set with yourself.
Make your goals specific & measurable.
Set a time frame for at least 2 of the things you want to do, and get to it! By giving yourself some deadlines in order to get a few things done, you will be able to feel the sense of accomplishment and keep going down your list. The most powerful motivator for getting yourself going is getting something done!
Remember how important this is to you.
We all feel just how important this list is during January, but give it about a month, and the importance is forgotten in the jumble of daily life. Until December rolls around yet again and we are reminded of all the things that we DID NOT do. Make time to sit down with your list and see where you are at reaching your intentions.
Create a visual reminder.
Just to remind yourself of the importance (which we just talked about), create a visual reminder of these in a place that you will see almost daily. Make a vision or dream board for your office wall. Keep magazine or internet pictures on a pin board in your bedroom. (No, Pinterest does NOT count. Look at all those boards!! How will you remember to look at those without being distracted by something new?)
Revisit your list regularly.
This kind of goes with remembering the importance, but this is more to remind you of your deadlines and how you are coming along in your projects more than for motivational purposes. This is to make sure that you are making headway; getting some of your lists done, scheduling time for yourself. Revisiting and reviewing at least monthly will keep the ball rolling (instead of just dropping, like it has done in years past).
Don’t give up just because you don’t see progress.
We all stumble. The key is to not stay down when you fall. So you aren’t as far along on your project as you had hoped to be. Giving up now just wastes more of your time. You have to look at where you veered off of your planned path and find a route back to it. You don’t give up when you get lost!! Think in terms of travel: when you take a wrong turn do you just keep going the wrong way? No. So don’t allow yourself to do so in your intentions either.
Don’t add to your list. If it needs to be changed, change it. But don’t overload yourself.
Sometimes we come across an idea or a project that we just have to do. We all do it. We forget one project in lieu of another. Which is fine to do, however when you find this, add it to your intentions list but you must cross something else off!! We can’t do everything, and accepting that and having to give up something in order to gain something else makes the change more worthwhile. Maybe you really don’t want to give up something on your list. Weigh your options and decide which you would like to do more. Sometimes we see that the NOW option isn’t the better one, it was just a distraction.
By making your intentions known and following the steps above, you can accomplish everything you set out to do this year!
